Captain Allen Clark is a USCG Licensed 100 Ton Master Captain (license current) and a Pro Marine Photographer who lives in Vermont full time. He is available as a boat delivery captain or a personal boating and sailing instructor. He often travels for jobs; travel time is charged from Vermont to the boat.

Captain Clark has been a professional in the boating industry since 1995. He has experience as a sailing/boating instructor and yacht delivery captain and an ASA Certified Bareboat Cruising Instructor as well as US Sailing Small Boat Instructor. Capt Clark serves the Northeast United States waters during warmer months and Florida and Caribbean waters during winter months. He specializes in sailboat and powerboat deliveries in Connecticut and New York but also covers Tampa Bay, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Maine, Bermuda and Florida. Many various deliveries covering the entire U.S. East Coast from Key West, FL to Penobscot Bay, Maine including the Inter-coastal Waterway as well as the British Virgin Islands and Newport, RI to St. Martin via Bermuda. Allen owned and lived on his Gulfstar 37 while cruising the entire east coast. Now he owns a VSR 5.8R RIB.

Boat owner checklist

Boat Owners: Please use this checklist and let Capt. Clark know if there are any issues with your boat. The boat doesn't need to be perfect, but the Captain needs to know what to expect. This checklist is also useful as a resource to remind yourself what you need to do to get the boat ready for a delivery or passage.

Readiness

• Battery charged.
• Fuel: note how much is in the tank.
• All required hull plugs in place; thru-hull fittings in good condition.
• Bilge (de-watering) pump works.
• Boat registered or documented, with papers aboard.
• Registration numbers displayed properly.
• Appropriate anchor and anchor line aboard.
• First aid kit aboard.
• Current navigation charts for the area.
• Working GPS or chartplotter with route charts installed.
• Commissioned for the season; engine in good working order and already started.
• Dock lines appropriate and in good condition (at least two lines 1.5x the boat's length; more for larger boats).

Legally required safety equipment

• Navigation lights.
• Fire extinguishers (sized for the boat).
• Visual distress signals (flares less than 3 years old).
• Coast Guard approved PFDs plus a Type IV throwable device.
• Working ventilation system for gasoline fumes.
• Sound signals.

Good to know

• Pre-delivery inspection available: $65 for the first hour, $30 per additional hour.
• Time spent on deliveries aborted due to equipment failure, or troubleshooting, is billed.

Allen is an experienced and qualified captain who will take extreme care with your boat to make sure it arrives at its final destination as quickly as possible to make a safe voyage. Here's some info:

• Day rate for captain starts at $500 plus $150 per pro crew member.
• An example 5 day boat delivery day rate with one additional crew member is approximately $3,250 plus expenses.
• To estimate a specific delivery cost: Distance / Cruising Speed = # of hours then divide by 24 = # of Days Multiplied by day rate of skipper and crew. Some inland deliveries are 10 hour days underway only during daylight.
• Travel expenses on top of the day rate may include airfare, taxi, hotel, etc. depending on the delivery.
• Other expenses may include food for Captain and crew, fuel, equipment purchased to make a safe/legal voyage that is not already on the vessel, dockage during unsafe weather or mechanical problems.
• Offshore deliveries are a 24 hour day and require enough crew to keep the boat running at night taking shifts.
• Some inshore deliveries along the inland waterway for instance, must be done in daylight and can have fewer crew, but the boat will dock or anchor at night to avoid running aground.
• If the delivery is held up due to weather or mechanical problems the captain and crew will make half their day rate during the lay days.
• Captain Clark requires that the boat owner adds the captain to the existing insurance policy. Insurers are used to this process and are happy to add a qualified captain.
